Leveling in Shardborne

In Shardborne, we want to offer players the ability to easily see their progression in the game and showcase it to their friends. One of the ways in which they are able to do so is through the leveling system we have built.
Obtaining Experience
Experience is obtained by killing mobs, gathering loot, completing quests and more. This way, it is tied into the regular gameplay flow which the player follows. The player's gathered experience is shown in a custom experience bar, indicating their current level and their progress to the next level. The maximum level a player can reach is level 100. The custom experience bar is displayed in place of the vanilla experience bar, a central location in the HUD.

Vanilla Experience
The place of the vanilla experience bar is able to be taken up by our own, as we have rewritten the need for the vanilla leveling system entirely. The vanilla experience and level gains of the base game have been removed. Every system that originally required vanilla experience has been reworked to accommodate for this change.
These are a few concrete examples of systems we've reworked:
  • Mobs no longer drop vanilla experience.
  • There is no longer a level cost tied to combining items in an Anvil.
  • The Enchanting Table now no longer requires bookshelves. Instead, it lets the user choose between all available enchantments at their highest tier, with the amount of Lapis Lazuli determining the enchantment cost.

A big argument for reworking these systems has been the expected gameplay flow for the player. We want to create systems in which progression feels natural, rewarding and free from unnecessary grind. We want to integrate as many of the systems as they are found in the base game, while allowing players to focus on their current adventure.
